I actually can’t remember when I first started to sew, but I have been around sewists for my entire life. I was taught by my aunt (Christine) and my dad who helped a lot with my non standard sewing projects when I was younger.
I have always loved fashion, but I think what really started things was "Project Runway" and watching the process from sketch to the final garment. I sew because I find that off the rack clothing doesn’t fit or look the way I want it to, so instead I want to try and make it myself.
What type of things do you make and is sewing a hobby for you?
I do enjoy making garments, I have made things for others but I tend to make more for myself as a test run. Definitely a hobby, I like to take my time and do it when I have the energy and time to focus on it.
I remember a project I did for textiles class which was definitely beyond my abilities at the time. It was a vintage gown pattern and was using slippery fabrics so was hard to cut and sew. It ended up being the wrong size and too sheer to ever wear, but a good learning experience!
My sewing tip is to "Always make a mockup", I wish I followed this rule sooner.
What is a favourite project you've completed?
I think my favourite project was when I made like 12 pleated half skirts for my dance crew. They took days to make, and a few all nighters to get them done on time. But they looked great on stage, and were actually used by many other dancers for years.
Do you follow patterns or do you create your own designs?
I do a mix of both, I like patterns, but some pieces were freestyle and made more organically.
I use an Elna HD-1000, it reminds me of the machines I used when taking textiles class in high school and has a mostly metal construction which I love.
Hobbies, interests, sewing and crochet
I work as customer support, and dance outside of the standard 9-5 hours, so finding time to sew can be quite difficult when I also enjoy crochet and am currently learning knitting! I guess I like looking at the garment process from start to finish, including making the textile itself.
