Kate was 8 years old when she learnt to sew at Brownies from her mum who happened to be the Brownies Leader. Kate now specialises in Bridal Gown alterations.

"Once my husband started working permanent afternoon/night shift I had to find something that was flexible with having our children. I didn’t want big overheads or having to sell things so I started alterations as all I needed was scissors, a machine and thread."

Kate had been sewing in her dining room which housed a long rack full of bridal gowns to be altered and all her accessories and when I went to photograph her she had just moved into her very own sewing room complete with full length mirror and an area that doubled up as a change room perfect for bridal gown fittings.

"I do it because I love romance seeing brides have their dresses fit perfectly for their special day"

"Always use quality thread I used someone’s cheap thread in high school and my mum was so cranky I’d used ‘rats hit cotton’ as we were gathering ruffles and it kept breaking"

Having the perfect needle to sew whether by machine or hand is so important to Kate.

"Each piece of fabric can only come together with the right needle to pierce the fibres"
