Janelle was the very first person I photographed for my sewing project. I started this personal project because I wanted to combine my love of sewing with my love of photography. It's a long term project and so far I've encountered bush fires, floods and now the Corona Virus. These events have not stopped my determination to complete this project, though it's on hold for now until such time that it is safe to mingle with people again.

I am so grateful to Janelle for being the first person to invite me into her space not knowing what would become of this project and where it would lead to.

When I first saw Janelle's space I thought what a beautiful space she had. Plenty of natural light coming through, nice views and all her fabric and supplies were nicely and neatly organised. Janelle has a dedicated sewing space giving her room to be able to design and cut large pieces of fabric when creating garments.

Janelle makes, cuts and coordinates costumes for theatre groups, opera productions, TV shows and other places that have a need for them. Each piece is uniquely designed to fit the right person performing a specific role in a specific production. It was so nice to see period dresses and costumes and imagine what it would be like to be wearing such an outfit. The craftsmanship and workmanship involved in creating each piece, each unique and so elegant.

Janelle surrounded by some of her creations

Janelle has worked in the fashion industry for decades and is also a pattern maker and dressmaker. She has created costumes for the Gosford Musical Society, Bell Shakespeare Company, Central Coast Conservatorium of Music, Blue Whale Theatre Company, Dancing with the Stars and many others. She is such a talented lady and it was a pleasure getting to know her.

Janelle, thank you for showing me your space and sharing your sewing journey with me.
